What are Horizon Europe Joint Undertakings and how are they funded?

Joint Undertakings are institutionalised European Partnerships established under Council Regulation (EU) 2021/2085, co-funded by the EU budget and private industry. Ten JUs are active: Chips JU, Clean Aviation, Clean Hydrogen, Circular Bio-based Europe, Europe's Rail, EuroHPC, Global Health EDCTP3, Innovative Health Initiative, Key Digital Technologies (now Chips), and Single European Sky ATM Research 3 (SESAR 3). Total combined budget exceeds €25 billion.

How does the European Innovation Council (EIC) support breakthrough innovation?

The EIC, with a €10.1 billion Horizon Europe budget, operates three instruments: EIC Pathfinder (grants up to €4M for visionary research), EIC Transition (grants up to €2.5M for technology maturation), and EIC Accelerator (blended finance of grants up to €2.5M plus equity investments up to €15M for market-creating deep-tech start-ups and SMEs). The EIC Fund provides direct equity investments in high-risk, high-impact innovation companies.
