Parliament Question: District-Agro Met Units

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF EARTH SCIENCES LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 590 TO BE ANSWERED ON WEDNESDAY, 22ND JULY, 2026 DISTRICT-AGRO MET UNITS

590. DR. BYREDDY SHABARI:

Will the Minister of EARTH SCIENCES be pleased to state:

(a) the details of District Agro-Met Units established, currently functional, non-functional, closed and those facing vacancies or infrastructure, equipment and manpower constraints, State and year-wise including Andhra Pradesh;

(b) whether the Government plans to revive District Agro-Met Units and if so, the details thereof along with the timelines set and the number of units planned, State-wise and district-wise including Andhra Pradesh;

(c) the details of the funds allocated, sanctioned and released for establishing or re- establishing such units, year and State-wise;

(d) whether the Government has identified specific districts in Andhra Pradesh where District Agro-Met Units are likely to be prioritised for revival and if so, the details thereof including target dates and operational plans; and

(e) The measures taken by the Government to ensure that revived Agro-Met Units are fully functional, equipped with requisite instruments and staff and integrated with local agricultural extension and early warning systems? (a) Weather-based agro-advisory services in the country were being provided by 199 District Agro-Meteorological Units (DAMUs) under Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa

(GKMS). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is continuing the Agro- Meteorological services to the farmers at the district level through a network of 130 Agrometeorological Field Units (AMFUs), established in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across the country, including 9 units in Andhra Pradesh. The relevant information and advisories are disseminated through digital platforms such as Panchayat Mausam Sewa, Mausam App, Meghdoot App, and other IT-based dissemination systems in the larger interest of farmers across the country. The Ministry is in continuous endeavour of augmenting the observational network, including Agro- Automatic Weather Stations and R&D infrastructure, towards achieving better accuracy in weather forecasting and improved meteorological services.(b)-(c) A network of 130 Agrometeorological Field Units (AMFUs), established in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across the country, including 9 units in Andhra Pradesh, is delivering the same service.

(d)-(e) The Agro-Meteorological Services at the district level are provided by IMD in association with the agencies such as the Indian Council of Agricultural Research

(ICAR), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, through 9 AMFUs, established in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras in the State of Andhra Pradesh, without the re-establishment of DAMUs.
