Parliament Question: Metro Rail Network in Chennai

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3073 TO BE ANSWERED ON AUGUST 06, 2026 METRO RAIL NETWORK IN CHENNAI NO. 3073 DR. T SUMATHY ALIAS THAMIZHACHI THANGAPANDIAN:

Will the Minister of HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government has expedited the pending works in Corridors 3, 4 and 5 of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) Phase-II project and if so, the details thereof along with the funds released thereon;

and

(b) the expected impact of the expansion of the Metro Rail network in Chennai on urban mobility, reduction in traffic congestion and improvement in last-mile connectivity? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS (SHRI TOKHAN SAHU)

(a): Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase II, for a total length of 118.9 km, comprising three corridors, viz., (i) Corridor 3 - Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 km); (ii) Corridor 4 - Light House to Poonnamallee Bypass (26.1 km)., and (iii) Corridor 5 - Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (47.0 km) has been sanctioned by Central Government at the cost of Rs. 63,246 crore. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), which is implementing agency for Chennai Metro Phase II project has informed that current physical progress of the project is 54.62%. Central funds for the Chennai Metro are released based on fund requirement posed by Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) i.e. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), which is dependent upon the progress of the project. Govt. of India has released Rs. 14,545.91 crore for the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II Project since its sanction in the month of October, …2/--2-

2024. The progress of project is regularly monitored by a High Powered Committee, Board of Directors of Chennai Metro Rail Limited and also at different levels in Central and State Government for its expeditious completion.

(b): CMRL has informed that the expansion of Chennai Metro Rail under Phase II is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility by providing seamless, safe and efficient public transport connectivity across the Chennai Metropolitan Area. Physical integration of this metro network with railway stations, bus stations, airport & other metro corridors is expected reduction in the traffic congestion. For improved last mile connectivity, dedicated feeder services make metro more usable for end- to-end journey.
