Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government has made any assessment of the India's foreign policy and diplomatic stand during the recent US-Iran conflict/tension;
(b) if so, the details of the diplomatic stand adopted by India at the United Nations (UN) and other international forums during the said period;
(c) whether there has been any impact on India-Iran and India-United States of America relations during this period;
(d) if so, the details thereof; and
(e) the steps being taken by the Government to ensure a balanced and independent foreign policy during such international conflicts in future?ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI KIRTI VARDHAN SINGH)
(a) to (e) The Government closely monitors all geopolitical developments that have a bearing on India’s national interests and responds appropriately to safeguard India’s interests at the bilateral, regional and global levels.
The continued conflict in West Asia and related developments are a matter of utmost concern to India. Since the onset of the conflict, India has been in close contact with the parties to the conflict, including US and Iran, and with other regional and international interlocutors. India-US and India-Iran bilateral relations continue to be guided by sustained engagements at all levels.
India has taken a calibrated and nuanced position on the matter in the UN, with the objective of ensuring fuel and energy security at home and the safety and well-being of Indian citizens in the wider West Asian region.
India has reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to arrive at a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict. India has urged immediate cessation of hostilities and to prioritize the safety of civilians.
India has also underlined the need to ensure unimpeded freedom ofnavigation and the safe flow of energy and commerce through the Strait of Hormuz. *****
