6. Policy Initiatives/Industry Initiatives The Ministry of Steel highlighted its digital transformation agenda through the Chintan Shivir held on 24th June 2026 on Digitalisation in the Steel Sector, encouraging adoption of artificial intelligence, automation, digital mining, predictive maintenance and smart manufacturing technologies. The initiative supports improved operational efficiency and sustainable growth across the Indian steel industry.

The Ministry of Steel granted Miniratna Category-I status to MECON Limited, recognizing its consistent financial performance and operational excellence. The new status provides greater financial and operational autonomy, enabling faster project execution and business expansion.

DGTR, Ministry of Commerce and Industry initiated an anti-dumping investigation into hot-rolled flat steel imports from China, Japan, and Russia following complaints of unfair pricing. The probe aims to protect domestic steel manufacturers from injury caused by dumped imports.

SAIL has further strengthened the nation’s naval capabilities by supplying the entire 5,700 tonnes of

special steel used in three recently commissioned Indian Navy vessels: the advanced stealth frigate INS Dunagiri, the anti-submarine warfare shallow watercraft INS Agray, and the survey vessel (large) INS Sanshodhak.

NMDC reported iron ore production of 5.15 million tonnes in June 2026, up 44% year-on-year, while sales increased 11% to 3.98 million tonnes. During Q1 FY 2026-27 (Apr–Jun), cumulative production reached 15.10 million tonnes, reflecting strong operational performance despite the monsoon season andcontinued demand from domestic steel producers.

The country's steelmaking capacity remained at 221.9 Mtpa, supporting progress toward the National Steel Policy target of 300 Mtpa by 2030. JSW Group announced the commencement of construction of its proposed integrated steel plant of 2 MTPA in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh.

7. Green Steel Initiatives SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant has launched a CO₂ Dashboard, a first-of-its-kind digital platform with 100% ERP-SAP based data integration to strengthen its decarbonisation efforts.

Barsua-Taldih Iron Mines of SAIL recently celebrated Van Mahotsav 2026 with a plantation drive.
