Parliament Question: Central Assistance for Foodgrain Storage Infrastructure

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS, FOOD & PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION DEPARTMENT OF FOOD AND PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. '2805 TO BE ANSWERED ON 5TH AUGUST, 2026 CENTRAL ASSISTANCE FOR FOODGRAIN STORAGE INFRASTRUCTURE 2805 SHRI MALAIYARASAN D:

Will the Minister of CONSUMER AFFAIRS, FOOD AND PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION be pleased to state :

(a) whether the Government has received proposals from the State Government of Tamil Nadu seeking Central assistance for the creation, modernization and augmentation of foodgrain storage infrastructure during the last five years;

(b) if so, the details of such proposals indicating the amount of assistance sought, approved, released and the balance pending, year and project-wise;

(c) the present status of each proposal along with the reasons for delay, if any, in sanctioning or releasing Central assistance;

(d) whether the Government has undertaken any assessment of the existing foodgmin storage capacity in I'amil Nadu including Kallakurichi Lok Sabha constituency of Tamil Nadu vis-a'-vis its procurement and buffer stock requirements; and

(e) if so, the steps being taken by the Government to expedite the approval and release of Central assistance for strengthening scientific storage infrastructure including modern silos, warehouses and cold storage facilities in Tamil Nadu? (a) to (c). No such proposals have been received from Government of Tamil Nadu during the ]ast five years.

(d) & (e). Foodgrain storage requirement is assessed periodically based on procuremenT operations, buffer stocking norms, operational needs, and the geographical distribution of storage capacity. The availability of storage capacity is reviewed from time to time to ensure efficient procurement, storage and movement of foodgrairis. As per the approved storage policy, the total storage gap identified for Tamilnadu is 0.54 IJMT.

In Kallakurichi constituency, the assessment has been carried out and hiring of TNWC Chinnasalem has been extended for further period of one year i.e., till 31.03.2027 to meet the requirements under Public Distribution System.
