Parliament Question: CSR spending by steel sector companies

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF STEEL RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3981 FOR ANSWER ON 27.03.2026 CSR SPENDING BY STEEL SECTOR COMPANIES

3981. SMT. MAHUA MAJI:

Will the Minister of STEEL be pleased to state:

(a) the share of total CSR spent by all steel sector units including SAIL, NMDC, MECON and large private companies on mining affected tribal areas of Jharkhand during 2023- 24 and 2024-25, the details thereof;

(b) whether it is a fact that many companies spend a large portion of their CSR funds on metropolitan, branding events and other non-essential heads, while basic facilities continue to remain inadequate in villages located around mining areas of Jharkhand and environmental pollution in such areas is becoming increasingly serious; and

(c) whether companies are taking measures to address these issues, if so, the details thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE (SHRI BHUPATHIRAJU SRINIVASA VARMA) MINISTRY OF STEEL

(a)to(c): Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) spending by Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) under the Ministry of Steel, including Steel Authority of India Limited, NMDC Limited, and MECON Limited, is mainly carried out in periphery of Steel Plants, Steel Townships and Mines which are predominantly inhabited by Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Castes and Backward population, including in the state of Jharkhand.

CSR initiatives are need-based and focus on sectors such as healthcare, education, skill development, infrastructure, and livelihood generation. Specific data exclusively for mining-affected tribal areas of Jharkhand is not centrally maintained.

The CSR initiatives by companies are implemented as per the CSR provisions (Section 135) of Companies Act, 2013 and CSR guidelines. *****
