Parliament Question: Expansion of SAIL Bhilai Steel Plant

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF STEEL LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 300 FOR ANSWER ON 21.07.2026 EXPANSION OF SAIL B HILAI STEEL PLANT

300. SHRI GANESH SINGH:

Will the Minister of STEEL be pleased to state:

(a) the details of the expansion of the SAIL Bhilai Steel Plant from 6.8 MTPA to 10.2 MTPA, including the estimated investment, implementation schedule and expected date of completion;

(b) the estimated direct and indirect employment likely to be generated in Chhattisgarh as a result of the expansion project;

(c) whether the Government has formulated any strategy to strengthen raw material linkages for the expanded capacity, including planning supply from the Satna-Singrauli coal belt and other domestic sources; and

(d) if so, the details thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE (SHRI BHUPATHIRAJU SRINIVASA VARMA) MINISTRY OF STEEL

(a)to(d): Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has accorded in-principle approval for capacity expansion of Bhilai Steel Plant from 6.8 MTPA to 10.2 MTPA at an estimated cost of approximately ₹ 31,000 crore. The project completion timeline is 42 months.

The project has a potential to generate direct and indirect employment during the construction and operational phases. All major raw materials will be sourced from SAIL's captive mines and domestic and imported sources.
