Parliament Question: Impact of West Asia Conflict on Steel Production

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF STEEL LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3774 FOR ANSWER ON 11.08.2026 IMPACT OF WEST ASIA CONFLICT ON STEEL PRODUCTION

3774. SHRI K C VENUGOPAL:

Will the Minister of STEEL be pleased to state:

(a) the details of steel plants or units that have reported production cuts, shutdowns, fuel shortages or input-cost escalation due to the West Asia conflict State/UT-wise and company wise;

(b) the quantity and value of coking coal, scrap, LPG, LNG, iron ore and pellets imported by the steel sector during the last three years, country-wise;

(c) whether the Government has received representations from steel producers seeking relief or intervention to ease the burden during this period; and

(d) the steps taken by the Government to protect Steel producers in the country? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE (SHRI BHUPATHIRAJU SRINIVASA VARMA) MINISTRY OF STEEL

(a)to(d): Government has taken active measures to address concerns of fuel shortages, escalation in input and logistics costs, availability of key raw materials and supply chain constraints. During May, 2026, India's steel production recorded sustained growth with crude steel production increasing by 0.8% over April, 2026 and

1.4% over May, 2025, while finished steel production grew by 2.2% and 5.9%, respectively. During the last three years, coking coal imports increased from 58 MT to 66 MT, ferrous scrap imports declined from 9.5 MT to 7.7 MT, while imports of iron ore, including pellets, increased from 4.9 MT to 12.2 MT *****
