Will the Minister of STEEL be pleased to state:
(a) whether India's steel production recorded sustained growth during May, 2026 and if so, the details thereof;
(b) the contribution of the State of Maharashtra to the country's crude steel and finished steel output during the last three years and the current year;
(c) whether the Government has taken steps to promote capacity expansion, modernisation and adoption of green steel technologies in steel plants located in Maharashtra;
(d) the details of investments, production-linked incentives and infrastructure support extended to steel units and downstream industries in Maharashtra;
(e) whether the Government proposes to establish new steel clusters, logistics facilities and scrap processing centres in Maharashtra to strengthen the supply chain and generate employment; and
(f) the steps taken to enhance exports, reduce input costs and improve the competitiveness of steel manufacturers in Maharashtra? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE (SHRI BHUPATHIRAJU SRINIVASA VARMA) MINISTRY OF STEEL
(a)to(f): India's crude steel production grew by 0.8% in May, 2026 as compared to April, 2026. Maharashtraโs 72 steel units contributed to about 8.0โ10.9% of India's crude steel production and 10.6โ11.7% of finished steel production during the last three years and the current year. Steel is a deregulated sector and the Government acts as a facilitator by creating a conducive policy environment for the development of steel sector in the country. The decisions regarding establishment of new steel units are taken by the steel companies based on techno-commercial considerations and market dynamics. The Government has taken several measures to promote capacity expansion, modernisation and adoption of green steel technologies across the country,
including in Maharashtra which include the following: - Contdโฆ..2/-: 2 :
(i) Implementation of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Specialty Steel. As of June, 2026, an investment of โน26,320 crore and incremental production of 3.7 million tonnes have been made by companies participating under the scheme which includes 33 projects in Maharashtra out of 167 projects.
(ii) Notification of Domestically Manufactured Iron & Steel Products (DMI&SP) Policy to promote domestic manufacturing and procurement of steel in Government projects.
(iii) Notification of taxonomy for Green Steel for defining and classifying low- emission steel and Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS).
(iv) Approval of pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. *****
