Radhakrishnan today attended the Fisheries Outreach Programme at Agatti, Lakshadweep, and released “Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031”, the Strategic Action Plan for Ornamental Fisheries Development. He also distributed various government benefits and assistance to beneficiaries from the fisheries sector.

Referring to the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, he said that the blue chakra in India’s national flag represents the potential of the Blue Revolution and the ocean economy. He noted that under the Prime Minister’s leadership, India’s fisheries and aquaculture sector has emerged as a major sunrise sector of the economy.

Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan said that the Government is transforming governance by taking support and schemes directly to fishing communities, rather than waiting for people to approach the Government. He highlighted that fisheries development projects worth over ₹62 crore have been approved for Lakshadweep under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana

(PMMSY).

Highlighting Lakshadweep’s vast maritime potential, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan said the islands have an estimated fisheriespotential of over one lakh tonnes, including around 94,000 tonnes of tuna and tuna-like species. He emphasised the need to harness this potential scientifically and sustainably while ensuring greater prosperity for island communities.

The Vice President also highlighted India’s growing seafood exports, which crossed ₹73,000 crore in the last financial year and reached more than 120 countries. He said initiatives relating to the EEZ and High Seas would further strengthen India’s fisheries sector and India’s presence in global seafood markets.

Emphasising sustainability, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan called for responsible fishing, conservation of marine resources and firm action against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. He urged the youth to view fisheries not merely as an inherited occupation but as a modern profession driven by science, technology, innovation and global opportunities.

Drawing parallels with the Green and White Revolutions, the Vice President said the Blue Revolution has the potential to similarly transform the lives of fishing communities. He urged all stakeholders to work together to make India’s Blue Economy a powerful pillar of Viksit Bharat 2047.

The programme was attended by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Panchayati Raj Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh; Administrator of Lakshadweep Shri Praful K. Patel; Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Panchayati Raj Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel; and Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, among others.

Vice President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan arrived in Agatti, Lakshadweep, on his maiden visit to the Lakshadweep Islands today.

He was warmly received by Shri Praful K. Patel, Administrator, Union Territory of Lakshadweep, and was also accorded a Guard of Honour on arrival.
