Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution Bureau of Indian Standards Conducts Search and Seizure Operation in Navi Mumbai; Products Bearing Invalid BIS Registration Marks Seized प्रव तथ: 31 JUL 2026 4:04PM by PIB Mumbai :Mumbai, July 31, 2026 The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Mumbai Branch Office, conducted a search and seizure operation on 30 July 2026 at M/s Won Enterprises / VHH Communication, located at Vashi Railway Station, Navi Mumbai as part of its ongoing enforcement activities to curb misuse of the BIS Standard Mark and protect consumer interests.

During the operation, BIS officials seized 12 electronic products, including Realme and Mi brand power banks, Luno brand wireless headsets, Boat and Realme brand earbuds. The products were found to be bearing invalid BIS Registration Numbers, thereby violating the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

The inspection revealed that one product was marked with the registration number allotted to another product, while certain product variants were found to be outside the scope of the respective BIS registrations. The firm was storing and offering for sale power banks, wireless headsets, and earbuds carrying invalid BIS Registration Marks, constituting a violation of Section 17 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act,

2016.

In accordance with the provisions of Section 17 read with Section 29 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, BIS will initiate legal proceedings by filing a criminal complaint against the firm.Under the provisions of the Act, offences relating to misuse of the BIS Standard Mark are punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with a fine of not less than ₹2 lakh for the first contravention and not less than ₹5 lakh for the second and subsequent contraventions. The penalty may also extend to ten times the value of the goods manufactured, sold, offered for sale, or affixed with an invalid Standard Mark or both as determined by the competent court.

BIS regularly undertakes market surveillance and enforcement actions, including search and seizure operations based on credible information regarding misuse of BIS certification. These measures are aimed at preventing the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of products bearing fake or invalid BIS Registration Marks, thereby safeguarding consumer interests and ensuring compliance with the quality standards prescribed under the law.

Consumers are advised to verify the authenticity of BIS-certified products through the BIS Care App or the official BIS portal before making purchases. Any suspected misuse of the BIS Standard Mark or complaints relating to non-compliance may be reported to the Bureau of Indian Standards for appropriate action.
