Parliament Question: Maximum Utilisation of Kollam Port

3431. SHRI N K PREMACHANDRAN:

Will the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways be pleased to state: प(cid:419)न, पोत प(cid:464)रवहन और जलमाग (cid:91) म(cid:287)ं ी

(a) whether the Union Government proposes to initiate action for utilizing the maximum potential of Kollam Port, if so, the details of action taken thereon;

(b) whether the Government proposes to utilize the port for Passenger and tourism including ship service links to Lakshadweep, if so, the details of action taken thereon;

(c) whether the Government proposes to utilize the Kollam port as coastal shipping hub connecting to Vizhinjam Port to reduce logistics costs and road conjunction, if so, the details of action taken thereon;

(d) whether the Government has initiated any action to generate employment in logistics, warehousing, ship repairing and tourism considering the potential of Kollam Port, if so, the details of action taken thereon; and

(e) whether the Government has initiated any action to improve berth capacity cargo handling equipments, if so, the details of action taken thereon? ANSWER MINISTER OF PORTS, SHIPPING AND WATERWAYS (SHRI SARBANANDA SONOWAL)

(a) to (e): Ports other than Major Ports, also known as non-major or minor ports, are under the administrative control of the respective State Governments and their development falls within the State’s jurisdiction and responsibility. Kollam Port is a non-major port under the jurisdiction of the Government of Keralam. Therefore, development and operational matters relating to the Port are primarily within the purview of the State Government.

The Government of Keralam has informed that they have accorded in-principle approval for development of the Port under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP)model. Under the Sagarmala Programme, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways under the Sagarmala Scheme has partially funded Government of Keralam's project for Development of Multipurpose Berth at Kollam Port with financial assistance of Rs.

7.24 Cr (total project cost of Rs. 15.15 Cr) for construction of 101m long and 21m wide wharf and other ancillary facilities.

Development of Kollam Port is expected to attract investments in port operations, logistics, warehousing, tourism and allied maritime activities, thereby generating employment opportunities. *****
