Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government proposes to undertake a new water project in Bankura district and if so, the details thereof;
(b) the present status of the said project along with the key specifications of the proposed micro-dams including their design, capacity and projected benefits;
(c) the number of villages likely to be benefitted from the said project; and
(d) whether any sedimentation has been reported in the river after completion of the existing irrigation project and if so, the details thereof along with the agency responsible for dredging and maintenance of the river? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR JAL SHAKTI (SHRI RAJ BHUSHAN CHOUDHARY)
(a) to (c) Water, being State subject, water resources projects are planned, funded, executed and maintained by the State Governments themselves as per their own resources and priorities. Role of Government of India is limited to providing technical support, and partial financial assistance for identified projects under the ongoing schemes.
1As informed by the Government of West Bengal, at present, there is no proposed project for construction of micro-dams/ check dams in Bankura district.
(d) State Governments take up desilting/ dredging works as per their needs considering overall flood management aspects of the critical reaches, confluence points etc.
As per information provided by the Government of West Bengal, the capacity of some of the rivers in Bankura District like Amodar, Gandheswari & Berai has been reduced due to siltation. Dredging of some identified critical stretches for a length of 61.25 km of these three rivers has been taken up with “No Cost to the State” approach, which apart from improving capacity will also generate revenue.
