3527. Shri Deepender Singh Hooda:
Will the Minister of EDUCATION be pleased to state:
(a) the number of universities where student union elections have not been held during the last ten years;
(b) the justification of prolonged denial of campus elections in light of constitutional values and its own stated commitment to strengthen democratic institutions and youth leadership; and
(c) the steps taken by the Government to institutionalize regular, transparent and fair elections of student unions in accordance with the recommendations of Lyngdoh Committee? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (DR. SUKANTA MAJUMDAR)
(a) to (c) The Central Universities under the purview of Ministry of Education are statutory autonomous organizations established under their respective Central Acts of Parliament and governed by the provisions of the Act, Statutes and Ordinances made thereunder. The onus of implementing the recommendations of Lyngdoh Committee lies with the individual Universities, the data related to student unions elections is not maintained centrally.
