Will the Minister of Education be pleased to state:
(a) the details of number and locations of IIMs in the country, State-wise;
(b) whether the Government has prepared any master plan for IIMs and the timeline for its implementation;
(c) if so, the current status of its first phase, including details of major infrastructure projects such as new academic blocks and hostel complexes along with their estimated capacities and expected timelines of completion;
(d) the implementation status of IIM, Calcutta;
(e) whether any special attention is being paid to the said institute by the Government;
(f) the current faculty-student ratio at IIM, Calcutta and the measures being taken to maintain optimum teaching and mentorship norms in view of the increasing student intake; and
(g) the initiatives taken to retain and attract high-quality faculty, especially in the face of global academic and private sector competition? A N S W E R MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (DR. SUKANTA MAJUMDAR)
(a) to (e): At present there are 21 IIMs in the country, the list of IIMs along with the
respective States of establishment may be seen at https://www.education.gov.in/en/parl_ques.
The IIMs are governed under the IIM Act 2017, as amended from time to time. Under the Act, the IIMs are empowered to establish and maintain such infrastructure as may be necessary. The IIM Calcutta Master Plan has been approved by the Board of Governors ofthe Institute. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has been engaged as the Project Management Consultant (PMC) for the project. The CPWD has awarded the tender for the construction of Hostel building and allied works. Actual construction can start after receiving of statutory approvals from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The hostel building shall have about 926 students. Timeline given by CPWD is two years from date of commencement of construction.
(f) & (g): The current faculty-to-student ratio at IIM Calcutta is 11.4:1. The IIM Act enables the institute to have academic autonomy and design programs to remain globally competitive. The institute has consistently featured in the global rankings in the area of management education released by the Financial Times (FT) and Quacquarelli Symonds
(QS) ranking. The institute has created a balanced ecosystem of teaching and research policies to attract faculty. The curriculum in the management programmes is designed to offer cutting edge courses. There is generous research funding to support research initiatives.
There are also monetary incentives to increase the quality and quantity of research and teaching. The faculty also contribute to the Executive Education activities for industry connect and resource generation of the institute. All these helps to attract and retain high quality talent in the face of global and private sector competition.
