Will the Minister of EDUCATION be pleased to state:

(a) the total number of students graduating as engineering professionals during the last five years, year- wise and State-wise;

(b) whether the Government has any data on the number of engineering graduates getting placement after graduation each year, if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the details of steps taken by the Government to create placements for engineering graduates in Government sectors/PSUs in the country during the last five years, State-wise? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (DR. SUKANTA MAJUMDAR)

(a) & (b): As per All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), the latest available State/UT-wise total students enrolled in engineering courses from the year 2019-20 to 2023-24 is given in the Annexure-I From the Annual Report of Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), 2025, the estimates of Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for ‘graduates’ are 58.8 and for ‘post graduates and above’ is 63.6 in India.

As per Periodic Labour Force Surveys (PLFS), the estimated Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for ‘graduates’ has increased from 50.6 during 2019-20 to 57.5 during 2023-24 and for ‘post graduates and above’ has increased from 59.5 during 2019-20 to 62.2 during 2023-24.

(c): Education being in the Concurrent List is the responsibility of both Central and States Governments.

To enhance employability of the students and achieve the objectives of NEP 2020, the National Credit Framework (NCrF) has been issued enabling integration of Skill Education into academia. It also enables credit accumulation through diversified domains such as Skill Enhancement Courses, Value Addition Courses, Ability Enhancement Courses alongwith Internships and Projects. The NCrF also has a provision for the accumulation of a maximum of 50% of the total credit required through skill-based courses. These provisions have enabled Higher Educational Institutions to provide relevant knowledge to the students, making them industry ready.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has taken several steps to ensure the availability of industry-relevant knowledge to students of technical institutions, inter alia: i. Development and periodic revision of Outcome-Based Model Curricula aligned with industry requirements and emerging technologies.ii. Promotion of mandatory internships under the AICTE Internship Policy through the National Internship Portal.

iii. AICTE Placement Portal to facilitate interaction between employers and students, particularly those from institutions located in rural, tribal and aspirational districts. iv. Promotion of industry-academia collaboration through internships, apprenticeships, innovation, entrepreneurship and skill development programmes; and v. Capacity building in emerging technologies through Faculty Development Programmes, AICTE internship portal, NEAT, SWAYAM, IDEA Labs and other employability enhancement initiatives.

UGC has issued ‘Guidelines for Internship/Research Internship for Under Graduate Students’, with an aim to improve their employability and understanding of the world of work. Further, UGC has formulated ‘Guidelines for Higher Educational Institutions to Offer Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP)’ to enhance the employability of students.

Further, The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with IIT Madras, has launched the SWAYAM Plus platform. The platform offers skill related courses in collaboration with industry partners, helping learners reskill, upskill, and become employment ready. This platform offers more than 500 employability- focused courses. These courses have been curated from more than 80 industry partners across 15 sectors, including Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Semiconductor Manufacturing, BFSI, Healthcare, and Advanced Manufacturing etc. More than 06 lakh learners have enrolled on SWAYAM Plus platform for their Skill augmentation.

The Ministry of Education implements the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) to impart on-the-job training and enhance the employability of students of AEDP, graduates and diploma holders. Currently, apprentices are undergoing apprenticeship training in various sectors such as IT/ITeS, Automobile and Auto components and BFSI, among others. At present, 17,625 establishments are registered under NATS across the States/UTs in various sector. In the year 2025-26 more than 5 lakh apprentices enrolled and completed under the NATS.A recent third-party evaluation of the NATS stated that 74% of trainees engaged in employment after the apprenticeship.

Union Budget 2026-27 has announced setting up of 5 University Townships in the vicinity of major industrial and logistic corridors and 1 girls’ hostel in every district through Viability Gap Funding /capital support to encourage enrolment of girls in STEM institutes/ courses.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, operates the National Career Service (NCS) Portal which is a one-stop solution for providing career related services including jobs from private and government sectors, information on online & offline job fairs, job search & matching, career counselling, vocational guidance, information on skill development courses, skill/training programmes etc.
