Will the Minister of EDUCATION
be pleased to state:
(a) the details of autonomous bodies under the Ministry responsible for development and promotion of various languages;
(b) the year-wise and autonomous body-wise number of meetings held by these autonomous bodies for the promotion of various languages during the last five years and the current year;
(c) whether the Government proposes to set up a high-level committee to review their functioning; and
(d) if so, their details thereof along with other steps taken to strengthen their functioning? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (DR. SUKANTA MAJUMDAR)
(a) & (b) The autonomous bodies under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, responsible for development and promotion of various languages are as follows: - i. Central Sanskrit University (CSU), Delhi ii. National Sanskrit University (NSU), Tirupati iii. Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University (SLBNSU), Delhi iv. Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha v. Kendriya Hindi Sansthan (KHS), Agra vi. English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad vii. Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT), Chennai viii. Maharishi Sandipani Rashtriya Veda Vidya Pratishthan (MSRVVP), Ujjain ix. National Council for Promotion of Sindhi Language (NCPSL), Delhi x. National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL), DelhiThe Government of India has established three Central Universities namely Central Sanskrit University, Delhi, National Sanskrit University, Tirupati and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University, New Delhi to achieve the object of promotion and propagation of Sanskrit language in the Country. Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya and Kendriya Hindi Sansthan (KHS) have been established for the promotion of Hindi.
English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad is dedicated to the study of English and foreign languages. Development and promotion of Classical Tamil is done by Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT), Chennai. Maharishi Sandipani Rashtriya Veda Vidya Pratishthan
(MSRVVP) works to preserve, promote, propagate and develop Oral Tradition of Vedic Studies/Shruti Parampara. National Council for Promotion of Sindhi (NCPSL) and National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) work for the promotion, development and propagation of Sindhi language and Urdu language respectively. Three Sanskrit Universities have been established under the Central Sanskrit University Act, 2020; The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad, was established under the English and Foreign Languages University Act, 2006, and the Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha, under the Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha Act, 1997; these Central Universities are governed by their respective Acts and statutes, ordinances made thereunder. The remaining autonomous bodies are registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860 and are governed by their Memorandum of Association (MoA). The Meetings of these bodies are held periodically as per the requirements.
(c) & (d) The Government of India has constituted a High-Powered Committee to explore and recommend pathways for the holistic and multidisciplinary growth of Indian Languages as envisaged in the National Education Policy, 2020. The Committeeโs mandate is, inter-alia, to advise the Ministry on all matters pertaining to revitalization of existing language teaching and research and its extension in various Institutions in the country.
